Artificial Intelligence & Ethics

We are entering into a new era of how mental healthcare is provided. People who seek counseling, psychotherapy, and even psychiatric services will no longer be limited to appointments with human healthcare providers. People will have the option (or perhaps not an option) to receive services from artificial intelligence healthcare providers.

Examples of this technology include virtual human counselors, therapy chat bots, and healthcare robots (see Luxton, 2016).

This new era of technological innovation requires us (all of society, not just academics and healthcare providers) to consider the ethical (and I can argue, moral) implication of this shift to "automated", virtual health care.

Below is a list of recommendations that I've proposed to help us to devise ethical codes for use of these intelligent machines that take the place of human health care providers.
